Two Mothers: A Story of Injustice That Breaks the Heart

ሁለት እናቶች፦ ልብን የሚሰብር እውነተኛ የግፍ ታሪክ
Jambo Show·September 4, 2026

Some stories are statistics, and some are faces. This episode of Jambo Show is about two mothers, and it is told deliberately at the scale of their lives rather than at the scale of policy. Their homes were destroyed. But the loss did not stop at the walls. With the homes went their source of income, the security of their children, and the future they had been building toward.

Why two becomes many

Jambo Show tells this story with a clear argument attached, and the argument is that these two women are not exceptional. Their experience is shared by a great many Ethiopians who have lived through displacement, demolition, and the quiet collapse of a household's stability. To call it the story of all Ethiopians, as the episode does, is a statement of solidarity: what happened to them is a version of what has happened to many, and naming it for two makes visible what remains invisible when it is only ever counted in totals.

This is a deliberate journalistic choice. Large-scale displacement is easy to discuss in the abstract, in figures and percentages that never quite land. A single mother losing her home, her income, and her child's sense of safety in one stroke is not abstract. It is the human unit in which these policies are actually experienced, and it is the unit in which they should be judged.

What the story asks of us

The reporting does not ask for pity. It asks for recognition. When a home is demolished, the official record notes a structure removed. What the record does not note is the livelihood that operated from that home, the schooling disrupted for the children, the network of neighbors and customers and routines that made survival possible and is now gone. The damage is always larger than the building.

Jambo Show's commentary here is that a society reveals itself in how it treats people at their most vulnerable, and that a mother who has lost everything is owed, at minimum, to have her story told truthfully. That is what this episode sets out to do.

Bearing witness

This is among the hardest pieces the channel has produced, because it refuses the comfort of distance. The full account of these two mothers is on the Jambo Show channel. It is shared here so that their experience reaches further, and so that the people living the same story elsewhere know that someone considered it worth documenting. Bearing witness is itself a form of justice, and it is the form this channel can offer.
